Explain these races Kierin- The kierin is a motor-paced event that is very popular in Japan where it originated. In that country, huge amounts of money are bet on races and professional kierin riders command impressive salaries. It is similar to the match sprint, but features 6-8 riders on the track. A derny motorbike paces the riders from 25 km/h up to 45 km/h for the first few laps. During this time, riders jostle each other for the best position and this is often the roughest part of the event. With two and a half laps to go, the derny bike pulls off and the sprint is on. Team tactics are important here, as the leadout is often quite long. If one team can get two of their riders in the final, then they are at a distinct advantage.

Miss'N'Out Pointscore- This is a standard Miss'N'out however the derny (motorbike) follows the bunch at 100m. As the riders are eliminated they drop back to the derny and continue till all riders are behind the Derny. The Derny sets a controlled pace for 2 laps than pulls off to leave a Kierin style finish.
• Scoring - in the Miss'N'Out phase, each rider receives the corresponding points to the position they are eliminated i.e. first out =1point 5th out= 5 points etc. The winner of the Miss'N'out receives his/her corresponding points plus a bonus of 1 point.
• The Kierin phase is scored as 8, 5, 3 and 2 and 1.
• The winner of the race is the rider with the most points.
Italian Pursuit- this team event combines riders of all standards to form two teams at opposite sides of the track. Team captains organise their team so as the slowest riders are at the front of the train. After the end of each lap, the leading rider pulls off completely, leaving the next to fight the wind. Therefore, the first rider has to do one lap, the second, two laps, and the last rider completes as many laps as in his team. Hence, the last rider typically has the best endurance. The pace of this race is continuously building and lead often changes hands between the opposing teams, until the final two riders are left to decide the race. If the handicapper does a good job this can be without a doubt one of the most exciting races as the excitement builds with the pace. Juniors attending State Championships (Port Macquarie)

Important announcement RE: Metropolitan Championships As many of our members will know, Cycling NSW has engaged Paul Craft promotions to host the upcoming Sydney Metropolitan Track Cycling Championships on Saturday 22nd August 2009 which are being used as a lead in to the Cyclist of the Year (COY) presentations which are to be held in the Handle Bar Tavern immediately following the events. These championships were postponed from earlier in the year due to our inability to find a promoter for the event.
With the upcoming World Masters Games coupled with the World Masters Track Championships we have received numerous requests from Country, Interstate and some overseas riders seeking permission to compete in these championships. We have also had to consider the purpose of linking the Awards with the Championships to provide an incentive for COY winners to come along to collect their awards, however upon reflection failed to cater for the large contingent of country COY award recipients.
The Board met last week to consider several proposals and in light of the number of inquiries have agreed to sanction (on a trial basis) the running of The Sydney Winter Track Championships incorporating the Metropolitan Track Cycling Championships. Both championships will run concurrently with a capped entry of 110 riders (due to venue hire and programming constraints) of which 50 have been received for the Metropolitan Championships (now closed). Separate medals will be on offer with the first 3 metropolitan riders in each category, regardless of their placings, being awarded the Metropolitan Championship medals. First 3 riders across the line will receive the Sydney Winter Track Championship medals. Medals will only be awarded where race numbers per event comply with the Technical regulations. Where numbers do not meet regulations it may be necessary to combine some events.
The Board in announcing its decision confirmed this was a win, win situation as it protected the integrity of the Metropolitan Championships whilst catering for a broader spectrum of the membership and also enhancing the competitiveness of the event.
Modifications to Saturday weeks Metropolitan Championship and Cyclist of the year Awards carnival are as follows:
• The title of the event will be changed to “The 2009 Sydney Winter Track Cycling Championships incorporating The 2009 Metropolitan Track Championships”
• Entries for the Metropolitan Championships have now closed.
• Entries by Country NSW, Interstate and Overseas competitors will be now open until Monday evening 17th August 2009.
• The Field will be limited to a maximum of 110 competitors due to time constraints for venue bookings and Awards presentations.
• Interstate and International riders are invited to enter. First in best dressed!
• Top 3* riders in each category will receive The 2009 Sydney Winter Track Championship Gold, Silver or Bronze medal respectively.
• Top 3* Metropolitan riders in each category will receive The 2009 Metropolitan Track Cycling Championship Gold, Silver or Bronze medal respectively.
• Should a Metropolitan rider finish in the overall top 3* they will receive both medals corresponding to their position in each championship.
• Medals are awarded on a cumulative Points basis over each of the events on offer.
*Clause: 3 medals will only be awarded in categories which field sufficient numbers as per CNSW technical regulations
We sincerely hope this regrettable late modification to the event will be accepted in the spirit intended and with an understanding of the benefits it allows whilst ensuring the integrity of the Metropolitan Track Cycling Championships.

RSTERN / Action Snaps Fat-Mans Wheel-race
Week 9 August 15
RAW @ DGV This week at RAW Track will be the much anticipated “RSTERN / Action Snaps Fat-Mans Wheel-race”
Since its conception three years ago in a discussion over a beer in the Handle Bar Tavern, the topic of this race has been a fixture of every track cyclist’s conversations. Debate has raged as who would be, by weight, the strongest rider.
This unique handicap is one that bucks the trend of dieticians all around the world. The handicap is by weight, whereby you are rewarded with a better starting position the heavier you are.
Here’s how it works To qualify for this event you must be heavier than my (promoter’s) weight. Right at this moment I am 94kg. On Friday, my official weight will be recorded and potential entrants will be weighed on the official scales. Entrant’s weigh-in will be done in cycling race clothing with no shoes. A pat down will take place for any contraband (extra weight). Your handicap will be determined by how many grams/kilograms you exceed my weight + 10m for every division below div 1 you are in. I have developed a computer formula to quickly and accurately calculate the marks.
The Race The event itself will be in a
Handicap Miss’n’Out format. The maximum limit achievable is 220m. Riders must provide their own sturdy handler for the start. The winner of the race will receive:
• A customised RSTERN coaching program
• Your weight in $1 coins i.e. 110kg = $110
• Perpetual Fat-Mans Trophy
• Jug of Beer
The presentation will take place in the Handle Bar Tavern Post event.
So who will be determined the Fat-Mans Champion for 2009? Be at the Dunc Gray Velodrome this Friday from 7pm to find out. Entry is free.
