Cycling NSW Board Approves new Track championship to be held in Conjunction with the Metropolitan Track Championships on Saturday 22nd August 2009

As many of our members will know, Cycling NSW has engaged Paul Craft promotions to host the upcoming Sydney Metropolitan Track Cycling Championships on Saturday 22nd August 2009 which are being used as a lead in to the Cyclist of the Year (COY)  presentations which are to be held in the Handle Bar Tavern immediately following the events. These championships were postponed from earlier in the year due to our inability to find a promoter for the event.

With the upcoming World Masters Games coupled with the World Masters Track Championships we have received numerous requests from Country, Interstate and some overseas riders seeking permission to compete in these championships. We have also had to consider the purpose of linking the Awards with the Championships to provide an incentive for COY winners to come along to collect their awards, however upon reflection failed to cater for the large contingent of country COY award recipients.

The Board met last week to consider several proposals and in light of the number of inquiries have agreed to sanction (on a trial basis) the running of The Sydney Winter Track Championships incorporating the Metropolitan Track Cycling Championships. Both championships will run concurrently with a capped entry of 110 riders (due to venue hire and programming constraints) of which 50 have been received for the Metropolitan Championships (now closed). Separate medals will be on offer with the first 3 metropolitan riders in each category, regardless of their placings, being awarded the Metropolitan Championship medals. First 3 riders across the line will receive the Sydney Winter Track Championship medals. Medals will only be awarded where race numbers per event comply with the Technical regulations. Where numbers do not meet regulations it may be necessary to combine some events.

The Board in announcing its decision confirmed this was a win, win situation as it protected the integrity of the Metropolitan Championships whilst catering  for a broader spectrum of the membership and also enhancing the competitiveness of the event.

Modifications to Saturday weeks Metropolitan Championship and Cyclist of the year Awards carnival are as follows:
·         The title of the event will be changed to “The 2009 Sydney Winter Track Cycling Championships incorporating The 2009 Metropolitan Track Championships”

·         Entries for the Metropolitan Championships have now closed.

·         Entries by Country NSW, Interstate and Overseas competitors will be now open until Monday evening 17th August 2009.

·         The Field will be limited to a maximum of 110 competitors due to time constraints for venue bookings and Awards presentations.

·         Interstate and International riders are invited to enter. First in best dressed!

·         Top 3* riders in each category will receive The 2009 Sydney Winter Track Championship Gold, Silver or Bronze medal respectively.

·         Top 3* Metropolitan riders in each category will receive The 2009 Metropolitan Track Cycling Championship Gold, Silver or Bronze medal respectively.

·         Should a Metropolitan rider finish in the overall top 3* they will receive both medals corresponding to their position in each championship.

·         Medals are awarded on a cumulative Points basis over each of the events on offer.

*Clause: 3 medals will only be awarded in categories which field sufficient numbers as per CNSW technical regulations

We sincerely hope this regrettable late modification to the event will be accepted in the spirit intended and with an understanding of the benefits it allows whilst ensuring the integrity of the  Metropolitan Track Cycling Championships.
