Day 2 Lidcombe Oval Report Riders were initially greeted with a very windy start to racing. The wind eased throughout the evening and so too did the temperature. Riders were spotted shivering on the line awaiting the start of events. After an initial rider briefing regarding the idiosyncrasies of the famous Lidcombe oval racing got underway with the polite etiquette of ladies first.
The majority of the handicaps went in the favour of the back markers except for B grade and A grade. Darryl Thorncraft used clever race tactics to cross from the back group to the lead group then kicked again when the Scratchies finally woke up. Kodie Howard used his handicap to perfection in A Grade easily holding out the field who were more concerned with race favourite Nick Yallouris.
D Grade come together The big action was in the sprint round, with four up 2 lap sprints conducted. Everyone simultaneously held their breath as the sprinters came in to the last corner. Stelio Pappas came away with a win, but he was happier he came away from the fence as the rider under him neglected to turn appropriately.
In the feature Sprint between Kiwi Matt Dodds, NSW rep Ben Young and Nick Yallouris it was the super muscular Ben Young who nailed the finish The winners’ race proved to everyone why this event is one of the most demanding of the endurance events. Every rider who made the top 4 and thus completed the entire distance, hopped off the bike feeling the full effects of this gruelling race. One rider who receives special attention is Chris Harris who managed to finish 2nd in three sprint to receive a bucket load of nothing for his incredible effort. Chris was seen not long after the third sprint sitting on the grass, with a bucket of something.
Brownie showing a bit of pain on Hardacker’s wheel (kind of on his wheel) The Madison series is hotting up dominant team Yallouris and Dutton tried to lap the field again but on a 440m velodrome this is a little more difficult than most. It will be interesting to see the handicap results to be posted later.
Flat-out
