Week 5 Bring it! This week’s Races• Round 1 warm up Scratch
• Round 2 Tirian McManus Junior Worlds Fund Raising Demonstration.
•
Round 3 Sprints (4 up over 3 laps)
•
Round 4 Madi-Leads + Div 1 Madison
• Round 5 Combines
Explain these races Sprint- at RAW Track, sprints are usually run as 4-6 ups over 2-3 laps the first laps are usually spent sizing your opponents up and positioning yourself for the optimum explosion to the finish. It is not uncommon for a sneaky rider to attack early in the hope of holding a lead to the finish. The sprint is a test of power, speed and above all, tactics.
Madilead- The pace in this race is set by a Madison team (see Madison). The bunch follows the Madison team for ??laps until, with 5 laps remaining the Madison leaders take off leaving the bunch to sought out the winner in scratch race style finish. The Idea of this race is to allow the lower grades to experience following a Madison change (which is a key skill in learning to ride a madison). The pace of this race can often change with the experienced leaders putting in a few hard attacks to stir up the bunch.
Madison- A high speed, two person continuous race relay. Think of tag team wrestling meets track cycling - while one partner is racing the other is resting at the top of the track. This race is named after Madison Square Garden in New York where the event was first held. Two man teams contest the event, which is typically an endurance event. Only one rider from each team is allowed in the race at a given time, meaning that teams must take it in turn each lap (or more) to have a rider in the race. Changeovers are quite dangerous, but impressive to watch when done well - one rider circles around waiting for his teammate, who joins hands and imparts his momentum to the slower rider. At RAW Track we usually ride this on a scratch race format reference www.cyclingnews.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XZ4_QbZJks&feature=channelTirian McManus is going to the Junior World Championships • RAW track prodigy the Boy Wonder Tirian McManus has been selected to represent Australia at the Junior World Track Championships.
• Unfortunately a large percentage of costs whilst subsidised by Cycling Australia fall upon the Junior Athlete.
• We will be holding a fund raiser this week at RAW Track in a hope to raise a few hundred dollars to assist Tirian.
•
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X99wkxb0MzE&feature=youtu.beThe Fund Raiser • We are asking RAW Track Patrons to chuck in some Cash
• For every donation small or large your name will be recorded
• One lucky donator will be selected by random draw and will win a one on one training session with Tirian
• Fingers crossed the training session may be with a Junior World Champion.
• As a demonstration for the night Tirian will ride a 1 lap fly (anticipated time around 14sec)
• It would not be RAW track without a twist.
• I am going to invite a div 4 rider (Example: Roxii) to ride a 200m fly to see if he can match Tirian’s 1 lap time with the 25% advantage of less distance.
Brian Sprouster generous donation • Brian has offered to donate all proceeds from YBN chain sales on the night to aid Tirian
• He only has Road/MTB 9, 10 and 11 speed left
• 9 speed $30, 10 Speed $40 and 11 speed $50
• If people want to pre order at

Should I go up a grade? • At RAW you will be never be told what grade you have to ride.
• However your peers may politely suggest you change grades.
• Added to this, I may offer some advice, in an attempt to pre-empt your peers.
• Division 4 and 5 over the past weeks has been anything but the slowest grades making it very difficult for the true Div 4 and 5 riders to get a respectable race.
• In the history of RAW, the “choose your own” grade policy has only been seriously rorted on three occasions, are you interested in being the fourth?
