One of the truly fantastic components of the Sydney X-mas Carnivals is that it introduces riders to tracks that they may never had contemplated racing at. With Sydney possessing one of the world’s greatest Velodromes, many a local rider rarely venture away from the smooth wooden boards of the indoor Dunc Gray Velodrome. Despite being located in the residential heart of Sydney, the flat tracks really have a country carnival atmosphere about them.  Each track is unique and has its own idiosyncrasies that go far beyond just lap distance and banking.  
 

Day 4 of the Sydney X-mas Carnival circus was at one of my favourite tracks and sponsored by YBN Chains. Lidcombe oval is 440m in length and with a fairly consistent 4 deg banking all the way round. However the true feature of this track is that it is perfectly round except for the inclusion of a short finishing straight.  The inclusion of this straight creates a bend into and out of the finishing area. Using the word bend is possibly an understatement, as corner would be a far more accurate term. Most riders at the carnival handled the finishing corner with perfection and ease; however this report is dedicated to those who could not.

Honourable mention to John Nguyen who drifted slightly in said corner only to run into Jack Edwards who did not.
 



The Bronze medal goes to Joint winners, two Central Coast riders Ciaran Quinn and Patrick Whymark. Both these rides gave a wide birth to the corner to insure that they were not caught out or involved in any carnage. The problem for the two orange clad riders was the fence that loomed ever so close to embracing the wide eyed cyclists.
  
         


Silver medal goes to Callum Docker, interestingly Callum is a local rider who negotiates the infamous corner with perfect precision and that is exactly what he did coming three wide into the corner. However it was Callum’s expertise that earned him the Bronze medal as the two riders below him were not of similar skill level. Lead rider Shaun Colley (Randwick CC) drifted out of the sprinters lane triggering Ryan Pawl (Newcastle) to move outwards in unison; problem was that Callum held his line causing a very close call.
 



And the Gold Medal goes to J-L Rathbone who at 65km/hr had a little trouble holding the bike down low.  
 




End result out of 64 races for the day (including the junior carnival) we totalled zero falls, a few relegations but zero falls. Additionally and possibly a perfect testament to the nature of the Sydney Christmas Carnivals atmosphere, all riders managed a beaming smile and a laugh with fellow competitors post incidents. Even normally fiery Callum Docker, who copped the shortest end of the stick, patted his competitors on the back in friendship post commissar discussion. Final day of the Sydney X-mas Carnival ventures back to the day 1 venue of the pristine Dunc Gray Velodrome.
