Sydney X-mas Carnival Day 3
Hurstville Oval

All photo’s unless indicated are by David Lane Action Snaps

Day 3 of the Sydney X-mas Carnivals was held at possibly the most beautiful velodrome in the world. The surroundings and ultra green grass lands of Hurstville Oval made an idyllic venue for flat track racing accompanied with cheese and bickies on a picnic rug.

This photo was stolen from Southerland Shire CC Forum

The longer tracks often catch out those track riders who spend most of their time racing on indoor venues like the Dunc Gray Velodrome. They are easy to spot, as they are the riders who launch into full sprint with 100% gusto at the first clang of the bell, only to fade dramatically on a lap that seems to be endless.

A feature event of the Sydney X-mas carnivals is the Sprint event in round 3 called the “1 Lap Screamer”. In this event four riders line up on the track side by side and are released on a whistle start, the race is conducted over one lap, so explosive power and top end speed is required to succeed.  When this event is held at the DGV, the rider who wins the start generally wins the race as it rare for a competitor to pass in such a short distance. However, this is not the case on the 400m round Hurstville oval. Generally riders who win the start are left gasping for air in the last 100m as the riders who followed in the draft blast past to take the win. This rule did not apply to local St George rider Timothy McMillan, who set the fastest time of the night with a blistering 29.23 seconds. Timothy was so explosive off the line that by the time he reached the 50m mark he was already 20m in front.

Friday is day off for New Years Eve celebrations. We are back at it again on Saturday night racing at the home of the cheese-melt sandwiches, Lidcombe Oval. Don’t forget it is a new year and 2011 Cycling Australia Licences will be required.

Junior Christmas Carnival day 3

Stand-out rider of the meet was Christopher McInnes who truly excelled all day. Little Chris has been improving rapidly over the 3 days of the carnival and today he almost got everything right. Going into the final race he held the lead on the omnium points system but was unable to seal the deal in the final Wheel-race placing 4th. It was left to always strong U15 rider Nick Edwards to take the win and the overall lead for the carnival.

Sorry to all the guys in B grade last night when I did a little offroading and thought I was in a mountain bike race......

I will give myself several uppercuts and be more attentive next time....

Regards...

I was two wheels back when you ventured onto the grass, I thought it was amusing, that was until you decided to head back onto the track. That was the time I filled my shorts.

Mass reply

To docker;
Correct on all counts, have adjusted points accordingly. Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

To All:
mistakes are easy to make, however they are also very easy to rectify, so long as they are identified to me. So please be vigilant in checking the scores and do not hesitate to contact me if notice a error.

To Bernard Riders:
corrected and fixed on this page and future posts.

To Tony U:
But wasn’t it nice grass

To Sideshow Bob:
Please clean shorts before Saturday

I was fortunate  to attend  #3 race of the Christmas Carnivals and i'm glad i did.
Its been a few years since even i raced at this track and the atmosphere on Thursday evening was fantastic.
The relaxed atmosphere of a large country oval is one of the best and very unique to Australian cycling. The soft grassed surrounds with the gentle cooling NE breeze made this an ideal place to be on a warm Sydney summers afternoon.

Unfortunately i was not able to race due to a  accident recently in the NSW Omnium championships and to tell you the truth watching everyone have fun at Hurstville made my injuries hurt more. Cry Cry Cry

Fortunately I was made to feel excited by the great racing in each grade, the excellent race announcing from Artson and a few Bernard beers that came my way during the evening. Grin Grin

Keep up the good work ARTSON.

Hows this for the best roller set up position at Hurstville! Grin

Entries for Goulburn Trackpower close a week later than other events. 2/1/2011
Use that Flat track experience you have now gained and go to GOULBURN TRACKPOWER .

the race is only one week away .your superior track fitness would be a waste if you skipped this event. Grin

I have no idea of the format r2160 Shocked
The best thing is turn up and find out what great country hospitality is like at the Country races Grin
Graded masters races sounds like selective softism to me so i'm hoping you will bring your chest and push it out to pump through the softism barrier! Wink Grin
