Week 1 ReportRAW track kicked off on Friday night with a lot of the usual suspects but impressively we had well over 30 RAW Track first timers. The racing was fast especially in the sprint rounds with riders given little time to employ sprint tactics in a lightning quick 2 lap event. Amazingly in a period of 2 ½ hours we managed to blast through over 50 races, that has got to be impressive in anyone’s book.
It was great to see boy wonder, Tirian McManus back on the bike and racing after his devastating training crash just prior to the National Titles. It was even greater to see Tirian actually winning races. Standout rider of the night was Randwick Botany’s David Stevens. The recently crowned National Master 2 Champion is in scintillating form and seemed to be able to win races with ease.
The RAW track wheel-race was also a dramatically fast event over 1.25km. All eyes were firmly planted on the smallest rider in the race, Bradley Heffernan, who had started the night in Div 3. Bradley made the most of his handy handicap, but unfortunately caught and passed the leaders with 2 laps remaining. Cunning DHBC rider Ian Dencker utilised what little draft existed off Bradley’s wheel and made his move on the final lap to win the event, exhausted and gasping for oxygen.
Next week’s racing will showcase the CNSW Time Blaster as the final event of the night and will also be the first night of Jnr Development hosted by 2 x Olympic Silver medallist Michelle Ferris.
