RAW Track Race All Winter Track
Dunc Grey Velodrome, Sydney, Australia
Week 2 July 05 2019
John Trovas and Rohan Hayden-Smith Fantastic to celebrate the RAW talent heading to the Junior world track Championships in Frankfurt Germany. However, in my opinion, it is far from raw talent, it is hard work, determination, sacrifice and grit by John, Rohan and both their families that has achieved their selection in the national team. I am not sure how many more times we will see the youngsters @RAW before August, but rest assure we will welcome them back as international riders in September.
To send the riders off, I organised a demonstration event: I put them up against two div 4 riders (Morgan Ho and Tom Stilwell). In the first heat John Trovas drew Tom to race, John was on the start line in a standing start, as Tom was on a flying lap. When Tom (Rabbit) past the start line, John was released and had to chase. It took Trovas (the Hound) half a lap to match the Rabbit's speed, at this stage he was about 70m behind. From that point the Hound continued to accelerate and diminish the gap. He caught his rabbit after 1 lap and 110m and when he past he nearly blew Tommy off the track.
The scene was now set for Rohan against Morgan. Rohan being an endurance athlete was always going to struggle in such a short explosive effort. His hope was that his selected rabbit (Morgan) was not as fast. In the second heat the hound again matched the speed of the rabbit about halfway through the first lap however the Rabbit this time was about 80m in front. That extra 10m saw the Hound devour the prey at 1 lap and 180m a clear win to the sprinter.
Other stand out riders or rides for week 2 In
Division 3 Mick West continues to be the best however, I feel he will have some serious opposition for the series from LACC rider Kia Goltman. Funny thing about young riders at RAW, they seem to get better over the length of the season. Might have something to do with growth spurts.
Division 2 absolute dominant riding by the multiple U15 National medallist, Oscar Chamberlin saw him impress all, including Tirian McManus who claimed a rare victory by millimetres in the Warm up scratch race. Both riders were at full extension throwing for the line. It would be the last time for the night that Tirian's name would be recorded ahead of Oscar's.
Division 1 it would be remis of me not to say that Rohan Hayden-Smith's ride in the Kierin was brilliant in playing to his endurance speed. He hit the front with 3 laps to go and just ramped it up continuously till the bell lap. This denied the sprinters a chance to out kick and out speed him, just brilliant! However, I think the rider of the division for div 1 in week 2 was Jack “Nugget” Bennet. It has been 10 years since Nugget has been to RAW and most likely 10 years since he has been on a track bike. But last night it looked like everything clicked into place. His old skills and track craft had returned and I am sure he will now be hard to beat for the rest of the season.
